A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Thank treasured objects and say goodbye; memories need not be discarded with them. YOYO photographs meaningful possessions to preserve that period, then thanks them for their companionship. Photos remain available when she misses them; not every physical item must stay nearby forever.

Usable books and clothes can be donated for others to use. Thank damaged, unusable things for accompanying you, then let them go. I value gratitude and sharing. Imagining an item accompanying its next person can make release easier; saying thank you also helps gradually bid farewell to attachment.

Tidying does not mean removing everything old. A longtime toy or small blanket that still brings happiness and reassurance may hold special meaning and need not be discarded merely for age. One childhood toy, pillow, or towel in an otherwise clean place differs from a whole space piled with unused things. Consider possessions alongside living space.

Moving offers a chance to tidy and start afresh, but large furniture is costly. Not replacing everything is not a grave matter. Clean what needs cleaning, and hire help if unable, uncomfortable, or short of time. I discuss environment and personal state influencing each other from faith, but circumstances still need understanding. One messy photo cannot settle a person's entire inner condition.

YOYO said she sometimes even keeps candy wrappers or pens because she remembers the giver and story. She learned to keep memories inwardly, thank objects, and gradually let go. Clothes seemed easier to begin with: if unworn through all seasons yet still good, wash and pass them to someone who needs them. This is her organizing method, not a rule requiring everyone to discard things after a year.
