Compassion and Vows
Can good deeds cancel out harm I have caused?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Good deeds cannot simply erase harm to others. Truly turning from wrongdoing requires stopping it, being willing to change, and taking responsibility. Continuing to hurt people while doing charity or discussing practice does not remove the problem.
I have used two hands as a comparison: one does charity while the other continues killing and setting fires. Can seeing the charity alone establish that the person is good? Consider more than one side of people and events. I have also seen news of people leaving harmful lives and later helping as pastors, priests, or deities' spokespersons. Such change deserves recognition. The key is having genuinely left the former harmful conduct behind.
In my understanding of karma, harmful actions bring corresponding karmic consequences and costs, while helping is another matter. Adding both sides together does not mean harm never occurred. Nor does someone's kindness to us or free service mean their harm to others is irrelevant. Alongside personal benefit, see others' suffering rather than choosing only the side favorable to you.
