Everyday Life
How can I find value in life beyond simply surviving?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
First take care of daily life, while leaving a little time to ask what you truly want to do and leave behind in this lifetime. Eating, studying, working, earning money, and supporting a family all serve needs. But if you simply follow the daily schedule without any inner direction, it is worth pausing to understand what you are living for.
I distinguish between learning how to live and learning about life itself. The former concerns managing everyday life well. The latter also explores the soul's feelings, the meaning and value of being alive, and the continuity of the soul. In spiritual practice, I look beyond this present lifetime to the true self within. Living well and learning life's wisdom through daily living can go together.
The value of life need not wait for a great achievement to become visible. Consider what deserves your commitment and what doing it means to you or others. Learning, changing yourself, or using your experience to help someone can all clarify why you are willing to keep going.
For example, when a friend tells me a particular part of a recorded program helped them, I feel happy and fulfilled. But I do not wait for thanks or approval before deciding whether the work is worthwhile. First understand why you are doing it and recognize its value yourself. Other people's responses can then offer encouragement, leaving you more grounded inside.
Do not reject your entire self because you fall short of someone in one area. From the perspective of spiritual practice and the deities and Buddhas, every life has meaning and deserves to be cherished. Others have strengths you lack, and you may have strengths they lack. Discovering those strengths helps you find direction. It is not a way of proving that only people who outperform others deserve to exist.
