A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Does empathizing with a partner's pain mean having to continue the relationship?

Not necessarily. Understanding a partner's suffering and being able to continue are two matters to consider together, but they cannot be confused. Greater understanding does not require forcing yourself to accept everything. If the relationship truly cannot continue, separation can be faced while still considering the other's condition and avoiding an angry attack.

Discussing an article about couple conflict, I said that knowing the other person is physically or mentally unwell calls for more care in understanding feelings, rather than judging only by your usual reactions. Yet genuine harm and things you cannot accept do not become tolerable through one demand for acceptance. I also know how hard it is for outsiders to fully understand that difficulty.

If separation remains necessary after reflection, consider a gentler and more appropriate way to handle it. Strong rejection and conflict are not required to express your hurt. This does not mean the right method guarantees every response. It means trying not to deepen harm when continuation is impossible. Human circumstances have many aspects, and later events cannot all be attributed to one person's insufficient acceptance.

When friends face relationship lows, accompany them, help clarify events, and remind them life is not only romance. Do not stake your entire self on one person. Consider your own capacity and whether expectations can fit together. Persistent one-sided, diminished giving without response is an imbalance that needs serious attention.

I have encountered two or three couples where one hoped to use love to lift the other from prolonged low mood, later becoming very distressed too. Helping requires capacity as well as intention, and the other's willingness to face things together. Most people are not psychological clinicians. Encouragement such as 'keep going' or total self-investment does not guarantee solving the other's problem. These were lessons from those difficulties, not a prediction for every relationship.

Some friends had partners who did not directly attack them but used self-harm or threats of death to keep them afraid to end the relationship. No physical attack on you does not mean no control or pressure. Recognize the other's suffering, but do not swallow every threat and unbearable burden. Let trusted people around you know and seek help.
