A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Why can foundational training and a teacher's guidance not be skipped?

Foundations cannot be skipped because memorizing principles differs from actually facing people and handling problems. Practice and skills can weaken without use. One powerful experience does not remove future training. Know where your strength comes from and its limits to use it steadily.

Learning with a teacher is more than awaiting instructions. Understand, try, and adjust through feedback. After studying divination, actual consultations reveal how you speak, what clients hear, and what remains unclear. Life experience and humility also matter. Pretending to understand can lead ourselves and others astray.

Before helping unseen beings, ask whether you understand methods, can use energy, and can confirm they have been settled. My comparison of a ten-year-old forcing a car onto the road without knowing how to drive warns about false competence; it was not an actual accident. With a great vow, begin helping visible people or join a teacher-led ceremony and recitation rather than going alone to graves to guide spirits. Professional work still needs time, learning, and case experience.

A teacher can guide but cannot practice or make vows for you. Seeking a title quickly should not bypass learning. Find suitable teaching, clarify questions, and examine whether you become clearer and better able to care for life. Increased ability brings increased responsibility. Continued steadiness matters more than a moment of appearing extraordinary.

I met people practicing movement for years without anyone explaining its purpose, making guidance important to me. Personal exploration may bring insights, but an initial misunderstanding followed for years can waste much time. Others' experience can help, while understanding and action remain our own. A teacher creates opportunities to clarify confusion rather than replace learning.

Knowledge also needs gradual development. Understand scriptures and the vows and character of the deities worshipped, then learn judgment in daily situations. Books and courses can begin this. Do not spend much time on movements without understanding why. Especially when preparing to advise, saying the deity handles matters does not excuse knowing nothing ourselves. Words affect people, so human learning must continue.

When Eason first encountered spiritual cultivation, he was asked to rotate and open the Eight Trigrams without understanding why or how. Looking back, he felt some foundations had been skipped. His individual experience shows that guidance cannot consist only of 'Just do it.' Learners particularly need clear purposes, methods, and explanations of uncertainties.

Some centers divide learning into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. I do not consider levels inherently bad. They can provide direction, but differences and assessment should be explained. Sheng Zhen Men's members and students cannot be directly equated with other centers' spiritual rankings. Advancement does not simply await elapsed time, nor does repeated movement automatically bring complete understanding.

Abilities also need continued practical training. I used high jumping as a comparison: regular practice differs from years without it. Even with training, age can bring changes. Learning once does not guarantee ability never declines.

At Sheng Zhen Men, students assisting ceremonies and other matters apply their learning. My statement that warriors need to know why they fight means this, not seeking conflict everywhere. A wish to help can gradually stabilize abilities through suitable work.

Further service in body, mind, and spirit needs usable skills. Discussing the five arts of traditional divination, I hoped people would at least learn a tool for understanding problems and accumulate actual service experience. Consultation numbers illustrate experience, not automatic qualification after a quota. Reliance only on mediumship is not theoretically impossible, but personal state affects judgment, and mistakes may affect someone's life. Caution cannot be omitted.

Great vows are a direction I encourage helping practitioners to develop. I also clearly said that without one, service can still be a job or skill earning appropriate income. The belief that vows broaden the helping path is my faith understanding. It cannot be reversed to disqualify everyone who has not expressed a great vow or label them insincere. With or without it, honestly assess current abilities and what cannot responsibly be accepted.
