Deities and Faith
How do the Three Officials’ blessings, pardons and relief relate to Shangyuan, Zhongyuan and Xiayuan?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Begin learning the Three Officials with “the Heavenly Official grants blessings, the Earth Official pardons wrongdoing, and the Water Official relieves adversity.” Their corresponding dates are the fifteenth days of the first, seventh and tenth lunar months: Shangyuan, Zhongyuan and Xiayuan, also their birthdays and days for prayer. Daoist faith explains their roles through the Jade Emperor’s broad domain and the Officials’ responsibilities for heaven, earth and water.
I once used a partly joking comparison for praying on divine birthdays: many people prepare offerings, so the deities are usually happy. Asking a friend for help or a loan may be harder when the friend feels low and theoretically easier when cheerful. In that sense, prayers on divine birthdays may be particularly successful. It was half in jest, not certainty that every wish will be granted.
Sheng Zhen Men’s Civil God of Wealth is principally the Heavenly Official. Folk traditions have other origins too, so every temple cannot be assumed identical. For blessings on the first month’s fifteenth day, good deeds are fundamental. Do not seek benefits alone; consider your usual giving. You can visit a place worshipping the Heavenly Official or Jade Emperor to offer birthday respects and express wishes.
We previously held ceremonies on corresponding days, discussing blessings, treasure basins and financial fortune. Those were arrangements then; current participation requires checking current service information. Wishing for smooth circumstances does not make “wealth for those seeking wealth, recognition for those seeking recognition” a promise exempting effort. Understand the dates and bring goodness into daily life rather than praying only on festivals.
I view blessings, pardon and relief together. Willingness to admit and change wrongdoing prevents endless benefit-seeking. I compare it to putting money in a torn pocket: without repairing the hole, money falls out again. Look at what needs adjustment rather than only increasing blessings.
At past Earth Official pardon ceremonies, Sheng Zhen Men also requested the Heavenly and Water Officials’ help. Though the event name emphasized pardon, we hoped blessings and relief would work together. This is our method. I said then that I did not know whether other places arranged the same way. Names alone cannot determine that.
I have used pardon and release from difficulty as comparisons for the relationship among the three prayers: blessings, hope for karmic wrongdoing to be pardoned, and relief from adversity toward a better direction. This is faith-based understanding. I emphasize repentance not only in seeking the Earth Official’s pardon but also blessings and relief from the other two. Reflection and reform belong throughout.
I have reminded people that on the Earth Official’s birthday, the seventh month’s fifteenth day, asking for compassionate pardon can be particularly helpful. Temples worshipping the Jade Emperor usually also have the Three Officials and may be visited nearby. Yet repentance remains central: sincerely repenting and changing, and believing the deities will respond, rather than relying only on a date.
Attending just one kind also need not be considered entirely unhelpful. Introducing the ceremonies, I explain their purposes while reminding people to adjust their own intention and behavior alongside faith. Connecting prayer with daily life matters more than memorizing three event names.
