A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Spiritual Cultivation and Movement

What is spirit movement?

In our practice, spirit movement allows the strength of the original spirit to express naturally through the body and gradually develop. It is not outside-spirit possession or merely completing a choreographed sequence. Qi movement, spirit movement and ordinary bodily motion each need understanding. Beginners should first know why they practice and what not moving means, rather than rushing to resemble senior practitioners.

In my early visits to Xianshan Xieling Temple, before experiencing spirit movement, I meditated under the teacher’s guidance. Once I felt strong pressure between my brows, described as a “spiritual-energy bullet,” which genuinely frightened me. After standing, I felt something like electricity spreading from the lower energy center. This was my religious experience, not an actual bullet or a phenomenon everyone must have. Later conversations showed some friends never felt that electric sensation.

People differ. Some movements are obvious, others subtle. No large movement or electricity does not immediately mean no affinity. I liked discovering things step by step, like playing a game without a guide, but that was my character and process, not a statement that beginners need no teacher. Newcomers seeing relaxed practitioners may hope one class will open spiritual perception and the governing and conception vessels, without seeing everyone’s gradual learning. Teachers need to observe and advise adjustments. A small unusual feeling should not become a medal. Online courses mentioned previously were plans at that time, not current course information.

Practice can be relaxed and joyful without being disrespectful. A practicing friend once thought describing spirit movement as fun was insufficiently solemn. I still feel life is hard enough without practice resembling military marching with a rigid face. I understand the original spirit’s expression through flowing ease and comfort. Releasing the inner child and returning to an innocent heart concerns ease, not guaranteed youthful appearance. Difficulty or pain is sometimes discussed religiously as clearing impurities, but that cannot explain every pain or require enduring it.

Classes then began with meditation and practitioners helping purify, allowing people arriving from work to put away phones, close their eyes and settle before practice. If someone was exhausted and fell asleep, I said rest first. This cared for their condition, not indicated higher skill through sleep. The Wednesday schedule, term structure and venue belonged to that time. Current classes still need confirmation.

We also tried exercise balls. Dao Xuan described the image of a phoenix spreading wings with chest, back and spinal stretches, feeling it differed from usual qi practice. Some participants felt a lighter upper body or freer arms. These were individual reports then, not universal changes in energy channels. New equipment required familiarity and people nearby for protection. YOYO felt her back and arms open but her head swell, so got up and discussed it with Dao Xuan instead of hiding discomfort.

Men did not lie on the balls then partly because the balls were too small and partly because dragon and phoenix practice movements differed. This cannot become a rule prohibiting every man from using them. The account is not complete instructions to follow at home. Suitability and adjustments depend on individual condition and teacher guidance. Others’ responses need not become your target.

Energy, like a skill, needs continuing practice. Moving well once does not remove further care. Practice seeks greater harmony of body, mind and spirit and gradual attention to discomfort, not ranking or proof of powers. Understand the setting and the process from beginning to closing, and care for daily life, sleep and health. Becoming clearer and facing your own work form the basis for continuing.

Being able to experience spirit movement also does not mean moving everywhere you go. Attend to the time, setting and task. Practice includes stillness as well as motion; learning to settle is part of it.

The same applies to spiritual language. Expression during practice or spiritual gatherings differs from being unable to stop during an ordinary meeting or business discussion. The question is whether you can manage your condition, not whether more speech or movement proves greater skill.

In discussing this method, I therefore first emphasize caring for and strengthening the body and cultivating balance rather than beginning with spirit communication alone. Sensitivity or inspiration may change in the process. These are possibilities, not targets everyone must pursue.

Feeling close to deities in a temple may bring happiness and a wish to move, like meeting family. Yet that feeling and the ability to settle both need learning. In Sheng Zhen Men’s practice, you can experience spirit movement and also worship calmly and feel blessings. Balance and stability matter. Constant movement is not required for ease.

The same kind of spiritual visit can also feel very different. Miao Qing recalled arriving tired after climbing to Xianshan Xieling Temple and finding it crowded, making calm difficult. Another visit with fewer people involved standing spirit movement and felt better. Do not demand tears or movement in yourself because someone else reported them. Understand your body, mental state and immediate conditions first to better understand your own experience.
