A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Spiritual Protection and Energy

Why does Master Shengyuan distinguish good and bad spirits yet say there are no 'good demons'?

First clarify what 'demon' means here. In discussing spiritual practice, I use it for the entirely negative side that obstructs growth, does not want people to progress, and instead pulls them downward. It is within this usage that I say there are no good demons.

But supernatural beings and ghosts in folk belief do not all mean the same thing. In some stories, supernatural beings are willing to practice and help people. Some ghosts are kind, while others are beings who have suffered injury, injustice, or regret. These differences in character and circumstances need to be distinguished. Putting several words for supernatural beings together does not make them all identical.

Anime and films may portray a demon king as lovable or kind. That is a fictional characterization, different from how I use the term in spiritual practice. When enjoying a story, understand what you are watching. Do not directly use a likable character to judge people or beliefs you encounter in real life.

I have also used the example of a downward force when someone jumps high to illustrate opposing positive and negative directions. That does not mean gravity is a demon. Bring the question back to yourself: which influences help you understand more clearly and become more willing to progress, and which continually take you away from your original direction?

When I say darkness does not become light, I am explaining 'demon' as purely negative energy. Human desire is another matter. A friend seriously studied Japanese to understand Japanese games; an initial wish to play became motivation to learn. These two discussions must not be mixed into a claim that every thought can never change.

As for games, hearing a certain name alone does not establish that they are a demonic temptation. You need to consider their content and how your life is affected by playing. Managing your time, playing during breaks, and fulfilling your responsibilities is different from playing without eating or sleeping and doing nothing else. Even with violent content, I have said that moderate play as an outlet may not be entirely unacceptable. Pay attention to whether you lose control and whether you can distinguish fiction from reality.

Someone then asked whether something negative could become good. We can clarify the terms further: if what I call a demon has turned toward light, I would no longer call it a 'demon.' This does not mean a formerly negative being can never change. Rather, in this particular spiritual vocabulary, calling it a demon describes the state of still pulling toward negativity.

I have also recounted another experience concerning ghosts. A being whom a senior woman practitioner originally perceived and worshipped later voluntarily told her she could turn to following the Mother Goddess in her learning. From the process she shared, I understood that some spirits are willing to help and practice, rather than necessarily cling tightly to people. We cannot settle their entire character simply because they are not deities whose names we know.
