A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

How can I distinguish relaxation from indulgence?

You can rest and enjoy the results of your efforts. What needs attention is whether recreation gradually becomes unchecked desire, pushing aside work and life responsibilities. A holiday or spending money does not automatically count as indulgence.

When I remind people that failing to progress can mean falling back, I hope they do not assume present success removes the need for future maintenance. Continue doing your responsibilities seriously, while arranging reasonable relaxation and moving forward after rest. Eating, dressing and living well, or buying a car you like, are not inherently wrong.

Something that began as enjoyment differs from rest if it develops into reckless spending, gambling addiction or constant partying, with all energy devoted to desire. Look back at your thoughts and actions: after relaxing, are you still caring for your original life, or increasingly unwilling to attend to it?

When circumstances change, also notice whether you merely appear to attend without truly engaging. The programme discussed working from home and online classes: someone looks present but their attention is elsewhere. Once accustomed to that, returning to the original rhythm can feel difficult. This reminds people to examine habits, not labels everyone working or studying at home lazy. Rest is fine; do not gradually abandon everything that needs doing.
