A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Start with activities that interest you and that you are willing to join. You do not have to wait until you are good at conversation. If you enjoy reading, look for a book club. If you want to learn photography, flower arranging, or a language, you can take a class. Learning the same thing together creates more opportunities to interact and meet people.

Someone on the program shared that after taking a drama class, they formed a small group with people who shared the interest and rehearsed and exchanged ideas on weekends. Another fellow practitioner took a writing class, got to know classmates through writing exercises, and later discovered a shared interest in mind, body, and spirituality. Friendships developed gradually through participation and interaction, not merely from enrolling in a class.

Even if you enjoy staying home watching videos or listening to Podcasts, you can explore related communities and find discussions you are willing to join. Find a direction you enjoy and maintain some contact with the outside world. It is never too late to learn, and you do not need to wait until retirement or loneliness before developing interests and friendships.
