Starting Spiritual Practice
Must repentance wait for a ceremony? What can I do before bed?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
You do not need to wait for a ceremony. Daily reflection and repentance are possible. Quietly consider today’s words and deeds, what went well and what you regret. Facing your heart is not restricted to divine birthdays.
YOYO suggested leaving three to five minutes before sleep, or ten when available, to review the day. Did hasty words hurt someone? Did an action leave you uneasy afterward? Even if you cannot visit a temple, you can inwardly express regret to the deity you believe in and honestly recognize shortcomings.
This is a good reminder, because repentance is more than reciting words. It includes apologizing to people harmed, facing guilt and no longer being constantly pulled by it. Daily reflection and asking divine assistance at ceremonies can coexist. The Earth Official’s pardon does not concern only unknown past lives; faults in this life also invite sincere repentance.
If you do not know a repentance text, begin in your own words. Tell the deity who you are, what you did wrong and that you sincerely hope for forgiveness. If expression is difficult, texts and scriptures can help you practice. Beautiful recital matters less than willingness to face the event.
I have discussed everyday reflection through confession portrayed in films: after insulting someone yesterday, ask today why and what needs changing. This is my faith-based understanding of another religion’s practice. Repentance also needs changed treatment and conduct, rather than finishing words and continuing the same temper.
