Starting Spiritual Practice
Why do spiritual cultivation classes and reflection matter alongside exercises?

Doing something differs from understanding what was learned. Meditation, recitation, movement and ceremonies require practice, but following actions and stopping there may leave principles unclear. Classes and exchange allow experience to be explained and understood.
Early in my learning, I often followed whatever teachers instructed. Some gained much through interaction and worship; others completed the same pilgrimage unsure what they learned. Those experiences remain valuable, and I appreciate my path. Later I hoped to organise learning so students and disciples could understand more easily.
So besides practical work, Sheng Zhen Men arranges lessons and internal training on divine virtues, faith and scriptures, discussing problems encountered. The aim is not extra terms but understanding what we do and using learning to reflect and adjust in situations, gradually building foundations.
Classes and daily practice complement each other like school lessons and field learning. I compared my daughter’s activities, where growing vegetables and learning about insects accompany books. Pilgrimages, ceremonies and interactions with practitioners likewise offer observation. Knowledge followed by experience clarifies how much we understand and apply.
Systematic learning also helps avoid others’ mistakes. I practised independently and acknowledge some find a sound path that way. But movement and spiritual speech do not confer discernment of every feeling or ability to handle everything by imitating a teacher. Clarify basics and raise doubts rather than assume a few accurate experiences prevent all future mistakes.
Friends imitated my apparently simple work in haunted houses and later faced trouble. In our faith understanding, preparation, aspiration and divine help cannot be copied through outward actions. Classes are not merely receiving a title. They develop judgment and awareness of limits, then application in life.
