A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Inner demons often build up little by little. At first, there may only be a thought that has gone off course. If you do not recognize and adjust it in time, you may stray further and further. In spiritual practice, this early stage is precisely what deserves our attention. Do not wait until a problem has become deeply rooted before looking for a way to deal with it.

When discussing experiences from providing religious services, I have given examples of children who felt that their parents did not love them or that their elders did not care enough about them. At first, they might simply have wanted to do something to attract attention, but they gradually used the wrong approaches until the situation became increasingly difficult to turn around. The point is that feelings of inner deprivation or hurt need to be understood, and we also need to look at how a person responds afterwards. We cannot simply allow those feelings to keep accumulating in a harmful direction.

If we can use clear understanding to change a thought when it first goes astray, we do not have to keep following the same path. Consider where thinking and acting this way will lead you. What I emphasize is transforming negative thoughts early and working on your own mind, rather than attributing every problem to forces outside yourself.
