A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Spiritual Cultivation and Movement

Must dedication be aloud, or can I recite silently without disturbing roommates?

Listen

Silent recitation is fine. If others are sleeping or roommates would be disturbed, adapt to the setting rather than force sound. Scriptures and dedication may both be recited inwardly.

Where surroundings permit, I recommend audible recitation. Hearing your own voice can strengthen intention. That is the reasoning behind preferring voiced to silent and louder to softer. Even quietly audible recitation is good.

There is no need to shout until the throat suffers. Match your condition rather than force volume.

Pace need not be rushed either. Faster or slower, follow your rhythm and pronounce each word clearly. Sound and speed belong to circumstances, not one exclusive form that counts as proper practice.
