A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Some people burp or feel nauseated during spontaneous movement or religious activities, and some feel tired afterward. Understand the circumstances rather than universally call these normal expulsion reactions or immediately attribute weak legs to outside spirits. Frequent, intense, or increasingly uncomfortable reactions need their causes clarified. Enduring them does not itself mean progress.

For burping and retching during pilgrimages, I have discussed energetic collision, excessive sensitivity, and one's own inner negative state. An occasional reaction would not alarm me, but frequent severe reactions call for examining practice and condition, not trying to make louder sounds. I have also said this can be learned and adjusted; vomiting need not be treated as evidence of advanced practice. This is my understanding in spiritual teaching and cannot replace examination of bodily causes.

Regarding exhaustion and weak legs, YOYO described early unstable spontaneous movement that, under our school's understanding then, might have involved outside spirits. After they withdrew, she was exhausted and needed support walking. In that discussion, I said practicing one's innate spirit theoretically should not cause collapse as external energy withdrawing might. But we also discussed similar reactions when deities descend and leave. External energy therefore does not refer only to harmful spirits, and all fatigue cannot be treated as proof of evil spirits.

Fellow practitioners added that a physically weak person may run out of strength even when practicing the innate spirit. Fatigue after practice is therefore one aspect to understand alongside physical condition, the practice process, and experienced observation. Different discussions offered different reminders about pronounced weakness after receiving a deity: sometimes departure was said to cause weakness; elsewhere pallor, gasping, and needing support required further investigation. These differences cannot be settled with one sentence. Do not create a simple chart equating comfort with the innate spirit and fatigue with outside spirits, then judge yourself or others.

When physical or mental health is poor, see a doctor first and ensure appropriate assistance. Religious questions can be explored separately with experienced people. Failure to improve after one medical visit does not prove an unseen cause. Nor can supposed exorcism justify restraining someone's body or reaching into their throat and causing harm. Practice is meant to help; we cannot rationalize discomfort until human safety is forgotten.
