Spiritual Cultivation and Movement
Can I trust sudden spirit communication or a deity or guiding spirit that approaches me?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
If you suddenly converse with an energy or someone claims a deity unexpectedly chose them, I suggest questioning, observing and understanding before judging. Especially if someone with no practice merely visits a group or worships once and is immediately called able to communicate with gods, perception should not directly become certainty of divinity. This reminder comes from many related cases I have encountered.
One common claim is being selected as a deity’s spokesperson. If someone has done no practice and does not even know who that deity is, selection seems illogical to me. I question it. I have met many such people and each time directly explained my doubts about the supposed deity, analysed why and encouraged serious thought.
In our understanding, affinity with a guiding spirit differs from being able to communicate clearly now. Before spiritual development and relevant practice, such feelings are usually harder to have. Step-by-step learning only makes contact more possible; a number of recitations or hours meditating cannot guarantee communication.
Understand content as well as origin. Responding to a listener about a guiding spirit, I advised clarifying who it was and where it came from rather than accepting a special title. If claiming to be a familiar deity, understand that deity’s virtues and whether the words and deeds show compassion and wisdom. If unwilling to explain its origin, I suggest not engaging. Even a stated name cannot replace further observation.
I met a client whose perceived presence claimed to be the Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady and offered good-sounding advice to behave, help and do good. The client therefore believed it divine. My judgment then linked it with a ghost. Pleasant advice and genuine identity still need distinction. Hearing encouragement toward goodness should not end every question.
Another situation involved outside temples. Someone on the programme noted many cases where, immediately after spirit activation, a person was told they had affinity with Master Ji Gong and he had descended to help. One accompanied a friend to meditate, was told Master Ji Gong possessed them and began services despite no previous practice, meditation or perhaps scripture recitation. Asked afterwards what work had been done, the person did not know. A speaker found this frightening and urged wisdom and logic. Whether it helped beings was doubtful; even without helping, at least avoid harming them.
Generally, I regard divine positive influence as comfortable, but comfort and discomfort cannot be interpreted in only one direction. Another’s negative energy may cause discomfort, yet in our experience of interference, someone already negatively affected may also feel uncomfortable before stronger positive energy. Both possibilities require understanding. A momentary feeling cannot establish who is divine or who has a problem.
Distinguish sources too: divine blessing, the strength of your awakening spirituality, or another unseen influence. Seeing the unseen does not confer ability to handle it or wisdom in every statement. I hope practice brings understanding and judgment, not merely pursuit of more powers. Ask about unclear matters and examine reasoning rather than accepting everything because someone claims spirit communication.
This judgment includes bodily protection. Discussing news of someone claiming divine authority for inappropriate contact with followers, I said that conduct unacceptable between people cannot become something you must accept because it is called divine instruction. Titles and friends’ introductions cannot replace your present judgment of the act.
Nor judge only duration or accuracy. Within faith, deities and other unseen beings may both produce these appearances. A teacher’s long career does not prove an orthodox divine connection. Listen to what they say, how they face problems and their actual helpful deeds.
Even if temporarily unable to distinguish a divine message from the teacher’s own wisdom, first consider whether the advice is reasonable and helpful. Useful principles can be learned without concluding the person must have divine power. I encourage questions and thought, not attempts to trap or test someone. One reasonable sentence does not require believing everything else still unclear.
