A central thread in Kṣitigarbha's vow stories extends personal inspiration and family devotion toward more suffering beings. He seeks release beyond himself and family and is willing to keep rescuing others, giving rise to the vow not to attain Buddhahood until the hells are emptied.

Introducing the Sutra of Kṣitigarbha's Fundamental Vows, I told of an elder's son admiring a Tathāgata's majestic presence and asking which good causes produce such virtues and features. Told to help suffering beings over long ages, he vowed to find every means across boundless time to relieve the most afflicted and become a Buddha only after their liberation.

Another story concerns two close kings wishing to help suffering beings in a neighboring country. One hopes to become a Buddha soon and then save them. The other vows to liberate them first and attain Buddhahood afterward; the latter is Kṣitigarbha. Both want to help, while putting beings first is what I deeply respect.

The Brahmin maiden's story begins with filial rescue. She sells property and gives offerings to discover her deceased mother's destination, following the Buddha's guidance to recite his name. The ghost king Non-Poison tells her that offering merit has freed her mother from hell to heaven, with others suffering that day also receiving release and happiness. Her wish to save her mother helps others too.

Bright Eyes also makes offerings and recites to save her mother. Learning that suffering remains, she vows before the Pure Lotus Eyes Tathāgata to rescue beings in the three lower realms over long ages and become a Buddha only after all of them. The wish expands from mother to every suffering being. I also use these stories when explaining the seventh lunar month as filial-devotion month.

Learn this intention through feasible acts now. Notice who needs help and offer a little more within your ability. Money, time, energy, and personal volunteer service all have a place. Begin willingly, then keep learning to broaden the heart.
