Caring for pets brings joy and responsibility together. Being with cats makes me happy, but treating an animal as family means more than finding it cute and wanting a cuddle. Cleaning litter, feeding and interacting all take time and effort. This differs from caring for children. You cannot look from the outside and assume it is easy.

It has also helped me find joy in small everyday things. Interacting with pets, eating something I enjoy or watching an amusing video can lift my mood. A more positive outlook makes the good already around us easier to see. Keeping cats is my experience. It does not mean everyone needs one or automatically becomes responsible by getting one. What makes the relationship meaningful includes actually caring for the animal daily.

I later felt that living with pets deepened an understanding of animals I had lacked. I had previously tried to help animals in need on the street, but actually living together and growing closer made me feel more clearly that they depend on you and need your care.

In spiritual practice, I understand this as learning compassion through a sense of shared being. That is my experience. People do not need to keep the same number of animals to count as compassionate. Missing my cats and rabbits when I work away from home also helps me understand that they have become important members of my family.
