Starting Spiritual Practice
How is Master Ji Gong’s joy related to granting wealth and replenishing the treasury of wealth?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Master Ji Gong gives people a sense of joy and ease. Most people also feel happy when they receive money. In our faith, we understand that he uses his spiritual powers to transform this joyful energy and help grant wealth. This describes his characteristics; it does not mean money is certain to arrive whenever your mood improves.
He once joked that he was especially skilled among the immortals at mending holes in clothes. I found that amusing and used the expression to discuss replenishing the treasury of wealth. I was not using that remark to establish what craft he practiced in life. In discussing treasure basins, I remembered that he had helped the previous year. But sometimes a deity gives advance notice and sometimes we only know on the day. His presence on one occasion does not mean it is guaranteed at every ceremony.
Praying for wealth is not only asking why the deities have not given us what we requested. The God of Wealth’s teachings also concern understanding money and avoiding becoming absorbed in desire. Being kind in daily thought, helping others and doing good differs from thinking only about what you can get when money is short. I am grateful for Master Ji Gong’s many contributions to our school. Seeking wealth does not mean disregarding how we live and simply bargaining for an outcome.
This understanding also comes from my own experience of financial difficulty. After praying to the deities and Buddhas and getting through several difficult periods, I felt Master Ji Gong’s help. That is why our school speaks particularly of him when discussing prayers for wealth. He also reminds us that once finances improve, we should not seek only our own well-being. We can use the support we receive to help others and do good. Seeking wealth and learning to share belong in the same discussion.
The individual wealth-granting and replenishment rituals later arranged for clients in need also relate to those early experiences. On that Lunar New Year’s Eve, Master Ji Gong taught me how to prepare and pray. After receiving support myself, I later used the method to assist people facing financial difficulties. At the time, we also distinguished regular arrangements from individual rituals addressing a person’s more substantial shortfall. Not every service for seeking wealth follows the same method.
