Staying up on New Year’s Eve is more than sleeping late; it includes family companionship and blessings for elders. Dao Xuan and I began with a child asking why we stay up and recalled large family celebrations. The tradition wishes elders long life and gives younger generations a chance to express filial care. Do not let it become only lost sleep while forgetting to spend time together.

For renewal, I suggest replacing Spring Festival couplets at New Year rather than waiting for fading or damage. Even if they still look new, replacement welcomes the year. I also recommend replacing incense pouches worn for a long time around the New Year’s seasonal transition.

These suggestions come from folk custom and an energy perspective, with an intention of welcoming the new year. They do not imply that all old objects still looking new are useless, nor does replacement guarantee every outcome throughout the year.
