A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Starting Spiritual Practice

Does everyday reverence for deities require a grand ritual?

Not necessarily. Reverence can be expressed simply in daily life. Fellow practitioners discussed passing a small roadside temple: a passenger may join their palms in respect. A driver who cannot safely do so should not imitate the gesture or become distracted.

Joining palms briefly on leaving or returning home in the morning and evening also expresses intention. In my faith, drawing close to deities in daily life can make one deeply grateful for a warning or avoided disaster at a crucial moment and feel ordinary worship worthwhile. Safety deserves appreciation.
