A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Why must I still attend to life's direction after suddenly receiving substantial money?

Do not rush to change your whole life after a sudden windfall. Treat yourself moderately, but pause to plan its use and distinguish genuine needs from desires growing because money is available. More money does not automatically improve judgment.

We discussed a monk who won a prize, initially intending to care for family, temple, and poor people, but later facing demands from all sides and having to leave. We also heard of winners stopping work, lending money, and eventually spending it all. These accounts remind us to plan sharing and avoid broadcasting wealth. They do not mean good deeds guarantee winnings or every windfall brings disaster.

Another report concerned an American winner who had built a company from nothing and already lived well. After winning, he donated, established a foundation, and helped churches, but later faced family deaths, drinking, gambling, and anger. I said the incidents and winning could not be equated and had no absolute connection. I hoped that in sorrow he could remember people he had helped, rather than see every event solely as caused by winning.

A Japanese story concerned someone changing life after inheriting. Previously earning little and worrying about retirement, he stopped work, bought a car and home, and enjoyed nightlife. Within years, the money was nearly gone, leaving pension, rent, and renewed work concerns. He was not entirely unaware of risks, but unwilling to think further. This describes his choices, not one standard for everyone's retirement.

From faith, I have discussed temptations leading people astray, but not every prize, inheritance, or sudden wealth can be called a demonic arrangement. Discretion and risk awareness add caution without guaranteeing no loss. Observations of the broader environment then also cannot determine every future year.

Young people quickly receiving resources face the same principle. Money offers choices, but spending may outpace life experience. Experience managing cash flow at twenty-seven differs from a child's experience of receiving a hundred dollars. Early success is not universally good or bad. Consider how resources are faced and used afterward.
