A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. By yin soldiers and generals, I mean some wandering spirits learning under deities and gradually receiving military duties while still practicing. Some sent to protect devotees later refuse to return and form prolonged attachments. This was one kind of situation we discussed.

Heavenly soldiers and generals involve attained realization, protective duties, sincerity, character, and spiritual vows. That differs from forcibly capturing unseen beings to train as troops. The title soldier or general does not establish a common origin. Examine sources and conditions to understand the kind of experience discussed.

Yin troops still learning differ from accomplished protectors. Comparing banks and underground lenders, I cautioned that unclear exchanges may carry unknown costs. If you can relate to deities, avoid casually summoning unseen beings. Yet people trying anything in hardship often lack understanding; constant blame is unnecessary. Explanation aims to enable discernment.

Some yin troops leave because they reject discipline; others sincerely practice, so not all should be called deserters. With long association, a person may gradually regard interference as protection. I compared cold and hot water reaching balance to explain influence, but a metaphor cannot establish an unseen being's origin.

I described two sources of temple troops: allocation by a principal temple with a branch manifestation, and unseen beings delivered by the temple and accepted into its troops. Thus not all troops were originally wandering ghosts. My comparison to homeless people joining an army explained the need for learning and supervision.

Some who escape discipline and fear recapture may seek receptive practitioners near temples. These are situations encountered in our work, not a claim that everyone meditating in a temple becomes attached. We explicitly said people without practice experience were less common among cases, though not absent. Most cases we encountered involved practitioners. A sudden sense of stronger ability may occur in such stories, but cannot be the sole criterion.

We explain matters to the person and to the unseen being, offering a choice to return and finish its learning or stay to practice under Sheng Zhen Men's deities. Some fear staying because the original place might object, not necessarily because they reject practice. These are working experiences. Finding the approach more compassionate and humane is my feeling, not a ranking of temple deities.

Early on, I would identify which deity they had studied under and request corresponding assistance. With Xuantian Shangdi or Lord Guan, I used 'asking the big boss to intervene' to explain coordinating and supervisory relationships. This work experience is not a formula anyone can apply after hearing a military title.

In other cases, the original leader may not be a true deity but another spirit detaining wandering beings and sending them on tasks. Leaving independently differs from being dispatched or constrained. Understand before handling; one shared name cannot settle every case's cause.
