Spiritual Cultivation and Movement
What do dragon and phoenix forms in spontaneous spiritual movement mean?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Within Sheng Zhen Men's system of spiritual cultivation, dragon and phoenix usually describe the original nature of the innate spirit. Tiger, snake, and other forms may express a role being performed. Think of someone's original identity and their later occupation as separate matters. Seeing one movement is not enough to merge the two.
I often use male dragon and female phoenix to explain common forms in our tradition, but inner yin and yang qualities do not necessarily match physical sex exactly. Some are more outwardly expressive and others gentler; look at the actual state. I interpret most tiger forms in terms of duties, while allowing that a few innate spirits may themselves be tigers. I have also met a friend whose innate spirit was a crane. Memorizing a chart does not establish that everyone is the same.
These sacred animal images also have backgrounds in mythology and shared culture. With unusual forms, however, consider whether other energies may be influencing them. Looking like a sacred animal does not establish that everything is fine. I consider whether the energy flows smoothly and feels comfortable, together with a teacher's knowledge and experience, to understand the overall situation.
Return first to the innate spirit's foundations. If several practices arise, do not rush to do them all simultaneously. Establish a stable foundation, then gradually understand other practices according to your circumstances. One unusual form does not allow you to skip what you still need to learn.
