Spiritual Cultivation and Movement
Does recognizing one's spiritual lord always require a ritual?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Recognizing one's spiritual lord does not necessarily require a ritual. Some gradually discover their affinity with a deity or Buddha through practice; others feel more assured with a ritual. In my faith experience, rituals can help, but their absence does not mean connection with a spiritual lord is impossible.
The main help is greater spiritual stability and clarity about what to learn next. Knowing you do not face everything alone, with teachers, friends, deities, and Buddhas connected through past affinities alongside you, can bring assurance. There is no need to begin by seeking supernatural powers.
It resembles remembering the source of the water we drink and reconnecting with ancestral roots: understanding where we come from, finding the way home, and approaching deities and Buddhas with gratitude. Remember human helpers too. Recognizing a spiritual lord supports practice; it is neither a shortcut nor the only method. Some explore affinities through independent practice and introspection, which require time and patience; for others the connection comes naturally. Whatever the approach, you must learn the practices and sound understanding yourself. One ritual cannot replace that accumulation.
A connection still needs daily cultivation and practice. Dao Xuan shared that before meditation, he inwardly asks the Lady of the Nine Heavens for support, then settles down to practice and reflect. That is his daily approach, rather than waiting for a deity to handle everything after recognition. Nor must you continually change direction because you feel something toward every deity and Buddha.
