Deities and Faith
What matters in the connection with phone wallpapers and religious objects?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
A deity wallpaper can bring faith more easily into everyday life. A phone is often nearby, and opening it shows a revered deity. When away or unable to worship in person regularly, it offers another way of drawing close. What matters is more than saving an image: do you understand that deity and feel a connection?
During the pandemic, when visiting the mountain was difficult, we made deity photos into wallpapers so people could draw close in daily life without being at Sheng Zhen Men. While reciting a Bodhisattva's name, for example, opening the picture allows exploration of this interaction. In my experience of faith, words and images can carry connection, though individual feelings differ.
Dao Fan shared changing a mother's wallpaper. She first used Hua Tuo, then liked the Martial God of Wealth's red, festive image and requested a change. Seeing the deity she liked each day made her happy. Dao Fan also described a sense of steadiness when reciting or suddenly anxious outside and opening the wallpaper to a dignified deity image. Such closeness and reassurance were experiences from everyday use.
Xiao Jun shared opening Master Ji Gong's wallpaper during a year-end banquet draw, stating who and where she was, praying, and later winning first prize. That was her experience, not a guarantee from the same wallpaper. Drawing circles for colleagues was her inspiration at the time, not a fixed method we taught. I reminded everyone that copying the drawing would not work for everyone. In my understanding, her confidence, joy, and attunement to faith also mattered. One action cannot be isolated from those conditions.
Discussing the popularity of Akihiro Miwa wallpapers, friends variously described improved sales or no feeling at all. These were friends' accounts. From faith, I consider not only the shared atmosphere but whether users genuinely identify with the image and feel happy seeing it. Following a trend while finding it amusing or doubtful differs from sincere belief. The pictured person's spirit, intention, and cultivation also deserve understanding, beyond popularity alone.
There is no need to chase a particular photo. Anime, cartoons, a favorite celebrity, or an encouraging phrase can all be wallpapers. Whether seeing it brings happiness and encouragement is more worth considering than following a crowd. For a religious teacher's photo, examine character, expansive love, and vows too. Widespread use differs from personal understanding and identification.
