Spiritual Cultivation and Movement
Can spiritual language, movement, or a spiritual role establish someone's level of cultivation?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Spiritual language, movements resembling a deity, or a spiritual role alone cannot establish someone's cultivation. These are possible expressions in spiritual practice. Character, wisdom, knowledge, virtue, and understanding of what one is doing still matter.
A spiritual role can be compared to a human occupation. A protector role resembles working in security. Spiritual manifestation refers to energy the soul directs and expresses, with movements perhaps resembling the Third Prince, Guan Sheng Di Jun, or Xuantian Shangdi. Similar movement differs from actually being that deity and does not mean every lesson is complete.
Early in learning, while waiting downstairs for an elevator before meditating at a fellow female practitioner's home, I felt I would speak spiritual language that day. Later, during meditation and movement, a sequence of sounds emerged. I had progressed from sitting to energy-induced and spirit-induced movement, but many feelings remained unclear, despite distinctly sensing an inner strength. Continued practice gradually helped me understand what I said and wrote and the energy involved.
Speaking English allows communication with Americans but does not immediately make one's nationality American. Spiritual language likewise does not make someone the same as a deity. In our religious understanding, other unseen beings may also speak spiritual-world languages and even recite Buddhist scriptures. Hearing such speech is therefore insufficient to confirm its source. Its content and our understanding need further exploration.
A friend taking over a temple once discussed operation and practice with me. I asked why spiritual language and hand seals led to assuming readiness to act for the deities and resolve every kind of problem. The purpose was to examine fundamentals together, not dismiss the friend, and clarify what had actually been learned and what abilities existed.
Speaking Chinese does not mean being able to deliver a good speech or teach. Likewise, spiritual language and using it to help others still have a learning path between them. A sincere vow to help, compassion that feels others' suffering, and serious understanding, training, and use of energy all matter along that path.
Warning against attachment does not reject this practice altogether. I also regard spiritual language as one expression of spiritual clarity and development, perhaps involving energy moving through speech. Something originally positive can lead in a harmful direction if we cling to 'I can speak it now' with increasing attachment. Experience still needs continuing understanding of its purpose.
Even writing spiritual script does not require reading every character as in an ordinary book. Dao Xuan and I discussed perhaps knowing the general expression, such as recent practice experiences, while details remain to be understood. Complete uncertainty about what one is doing calls even more for help discerning it. Understanding a few characters cannot alone become an examination of spiritual rank.
Dao Xuan also described beginning with energy-induced movement. Bodily movements cannot directly establish competence in spiritual services or knowledge of a heavenly calling. Those wishing to help need stable abilities and compassion. Seeing one movement cannot justify declaring oneself or someone else equipped for divine duties.
