A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Why does spiritual practice call for committing to one place of learning?

Committing to one place means giving yourself time to learn properly after finding a suitable, trustworthy teacher and community. I have used Buddhist taking refuge, Taoist initiation, and Christian baptism to explain this. Learning a little here today and another approach tomorrow may bring broad contact without completing one system of practice.

It is like changing universities continually across four years, studying only parts at each and perhaps never completing the degree. Practice also requires gradual accumulation. However, commitment does not mean following only one teacher forever. Finding a genuinely suitable place can require repeated exploration and confirmation.

Dao Shan shared that a grandfather was an I-Kuan Tao lecturer and parents interested in religion introduced different traditions from childhood. Asked why they kept changing places, the parents said old problems were resolved but new ones arose. Differences with teachers sometimes required further searching too. Knowing how difficult that process was, Dao Shan valued the good fortune of finding a suitable place. After finding one, genuinely participate rather than neglecting your spiritual home while continually going elsewhere.

Personal practice is possible at home, while group learning adds a teacher's guidance. A teacher familiar with your longer journey can help clarify problems. I welcome questions too. Answering and consulting the deities also teaches me new things.

At Sheng Zhen Men, transmitting the Way, teaching skills, and resolving doubts means explaining faith clearly, learning practical methods, and addressing inner questions. Different ages and occupations can learn. Group practice is more than ritual attendance. Classes also help us understand the deities' spirit and ideas and apply learning in daily life.

Focused learning still requires distinguishing the environment you are in. Increasing fear after contact with a teacher, including threats that family will suffer unless demands are followed, is wrong. Apparent powers do not justify complete belief. If unhappy in a group, objectively examine whether the issue lies in personal inner obstacles or actual harmful influences from the group. Commitment means learning well somewhere suitable, not forcing yourself to remain under every circumstance.

After choosing a direction, criticism and advice can still be heard. Early on, others' words easily swayed me. Later I learned personal judgment. Does the statement fit reality, and does it relate to what is being learned and done? Receiving guidance and maintaining direction can coexist without changing whenever anyone speaks.

A good learning environment resembles a school with suitable teachers and resources, reducing unnecessary detours. Practice especially concerns unseen and spiritual matters, where an initial perception does not establish discernment. Treating misunderstanding as a principle and continually following it can lead astray. Learning from earlier experience means adopting what is good and avoiding what is wrong. That is the value of guidance.

Even in a good environment, personal character still matters. People make mistakes in good schools too. Following a good teacher still depends on willingness to learn and change. Joining a group cannot mean no longer holding ourselves to standards.

When couples join Sheng Zhen Men together, I feel supported and cherish their trust. Meeting after so many years among so many people, sharing convictions, and practicing together feels like a deep connection and a bond of souls to me. Cherish the chance to meet along this path.

A condition underlies this: the place itself must be a suitable, good learning environment. Continued participation then allows learning to accumulate. This does not prohibit visiting major temples, speaking with other teachers, or worshipping deities familiar since childhood. My reminder is not to keep seeking outside while abandoning current lessons. Commitment should not become severing contact with other beliefs.

I have also explicitly said that when a connection ends, wanting to leave a group is understandable. Going to someone's home or office to block them and force a return is wrong. Firm faith cannot replace the individual's wishes.

When something is unclear or feels wrong, ask further, observe, and consult other views. I share judgments while welcoming discussion of whether they make sense. Concentrating on one approach is meant to support learning. It does not mean hearing only one person's words forever or swallowing later problems merely because you once believed.
