A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Everyday life offers many good deeds without requiring a special identity. Clean shared spaces, volunteer, care for someone needing help, or look after animals. First see the need before you, then respond within your abilities.

During beach cleanups, we even collect tiny plastic cords and fragments because they can still harm marine life. I have discussed the story of returning starfish to the sea: thousands may be impossible to save, but saving one saves a life. Inability to complete everything should not make us abandon what is possible now. A fellow practitioner also described reciting Buddha-names in blessing when encountering dead marine creatures.

We discussed an older woman in Puli who continued worrying in later life about whether stray cats and dogs had enough food and whether storms would damage their shelters. Her family later joined in caring for them so she could continue what mattered to her. Dao Sheng initially mainly wanted to help animals, then, following a reminder from the Martial God of Wealth, also hoped to help more people who could help others in turn. This broadened care. Cats and dogs still deserved help; there was no instruction to abandon them.

Without money, time and labor are still possible. Master Ji Gong once asked a client seeking improved fortune and to make up for past shortcomings to sweep Sheng Zhen Men when free. Willingness to bend down and do work others avoid for everyone's benefit is a contribution. Visible or behind the scenes, noticed or not, it can be done sincerely.

Giving directions in a hospital and volunteering at blood drives are good deeds too. If financial giving is not your choice, find another willing approach. Friends in another group told me of seriously ill elders still traveling early to wipe tables and sweep a temple. Making the surroundings comfortable for visitors also helps people.

Sharing kindness need not wait for fame. As someone's mother, friend, colleague, or supervisor, you can influence those nearby. A warm remark or sharing a good action with one or two people may lead them to influence others. Do not overlook that strength merely because your reach is small.

Your expertise can also help. Dao Yue created Flying Tiger General artwork for Sheng Zhen Men without payment, later drawing stickers that others helped complete. I value that willingness to share and hope users feel happy, rather than focusing only on returns. The creator's unpaid contribution and the stickers' small purchase price both existed at the time.
