A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. You can give without much money. Begin with what you can contribute now. Besides donations, time, labor, expertise, or words that settle someone's heart can all help. You do not have to keep waiting until you are wealthy or free.

Beach cleanups and sweeping a temple are practical contributions. Beach rubbish may seem endless, but removing a little more still helps marine life. I have recounted an oil-lamp offering story in which an elderly devotee gave the only half-unit of money she had, leaving nothing even for food. The story concerns willingness to give, which cannot be judged by amount alone. What each person can do now still needs to be considered according to capacity.

Sharing helpful understanding that gives courage to face difficulty is giving the teaching. Helping financially within your means is material giving. Words and actions that lessen fear are giving fearlessness. With limited finances, you can still recite scriptures, offer lamps, or clean, without comparing ceremony fees with others. Friends in another group also shared how elders traveled early to wipe tables and sweep a temple so everyone had a clean place. That intention deserves appreciation.

Even with little money or strength, you can sincerely wish others well. Hoping for their safety and success is a kind intention you can offer now. Having little to give does not mean being entirely unable to help.

Life and time are limited, so begin what you can now. Some free time after work can go to volunteering and gradually developing the habit of helping. A vow to give for living beings starts with what can be helped before you. Contribute money if available and effort if possible, putting action behind the vow instead of waiting for the deities to make you wealthy first.

I have also spoken strictly about the heart of giving: 'Giving away everything you have is true giving.' At the time I also said that giving only a little from great abundance could be worse than not giving, and noted that donations can aim to show others that one has donated and done charity. In the same conversation, I said those with money can contribute money and those without it can contribute effort, choosing within their capacity and not comparing amounts or duration. Giving calls for examining our hearts and actually acting.

If work and finances are already affected, not donating money is fine. I previously volunteered at blood drives, encouraging people on site to donate. I gave time without needing to give money or necessarily donate blood myself. Finding a feasible way to participate turns goodwill into action.

Without money, you can clean or volunteer at a spiritual center you like when able, giving others a clean place. But do not imagine that sweeping once for twenty minutes a year can be exchanged for wealth and longevity. My reminder is to gradually make simple contributions a habit. Afterward, you can still observe your circumstances and discuss what remains unclear.

Helping is not only about earning money, but neither must every matter be handled free regardless of strain. Discussing religious services involving karmic relationships, I have also retained consideration of energetic exchange. Personal living needs, capacity, and the nature of the matter need to be considered together. One statement about selflessness cannot require unlimited responsibility from everyone.

Sharing ideas you genuinely understand and that help people is also possible. When we began recording, few listened. Yet if someone learned a little or became less afraid, we felt it worthwhile. Giving fearlessness helps people become free from fear. It need not cost much or wait for a large audience before we will do a small thing before us.
