A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

How can goodwill actually be received when speaking and teaching?

If your aim is a constructive discussion, remember that purpose while speaking. Family familiarity can sometimes make us focus only on our views. What begins as concern grows increasingly harsh, as though we were enemies. Willingness to consider the other person’s position helps keep goodwill from becoming an argument.

Dao Fan described visiting a fortune-telling tea shop at university. The teacher answered by scolding and even used appearance to insult people asking about relationships, leaving her embarrassed and afraid. I distinguish directly addressing a repeated mistake already cautioned about from an unreasonable personal attack. She did not later develop the illness predicted then, and understood through faith that perhaps cultivation had changed her destiny. That was her interpretation, not proof of prediction, disease causation, or therapeutic effect. Reports of accuracy and popular demand cannot turn humiliation into wise teaching.

Religious activities likewise require care in guidance and courtesy. Once, an argument on the side where we were entering led staff to direct us to the other side, which felt somewhat awkward. That was the situation on that occasion, not a rule for every place. Attend to others’ circumstances while remembering the original wish to handle matters well.

The same reminder from a teacher can create different pressure for a student. I may simply think something could be corrected, while the student worries all day that I dislike them. Not intending much does not mean the listener cannot be hurt. This is something I need to watch too.

When advising, first acknowledge what the person genuinely does well, then explain what could improve. This is not endless praise; it helps them recognize ability and room for progress. Someone nervous in a new environment especially needs consideration for the reminder to be useful.

Tone matters alongside content. Words may be reasonable, yet inner judgment and a wish to overpower someone can still convey discomfort. In our comments on current affairs, we must remember that the aim is showing possible adjustment, not releasing all our anger while pointing out mistakes.

Rules can be explained clearly and courteously. In my mask example, apologizing, explaining company requirements, and asking cooperation feels very different from directly refusing checkout service unless a mask is worn. A reasonable requirement still needs care in its expression.

Becoming a teacher has made this balance feel more difficult. If a student acts poorly and nothing is explained, others ask why we do not intervene. If intervention is only scolding, it transmits negative emotion. Matters still need handling, but clear explanation of right and wrong should allow learning and wisdom, creating a chance to change.

Greater influence requires greater attention to speech. Speaking well does not mean saying only what people enjoy hearing. It means expressing the original wish to educate and help carefully. Criticism and identifying problems allow different approaches; being right does not justify any amount of scolding.

Sometimes kind words simply express a true feeling. A visitor to Sheng Zhen Men said the worship hall felt comfortable. I was delighted and thanked the visitor, whose willingness to express that affirmation encouraged us. From an energy perspective, I see this as sharing good strength with one another.

Some people nod throughout an explanation but leave still not understanding. YOYO said that while assisting Master Ji Gong, she reorganizes the meaning into words the person understands and checks what has been grasped. We have also seen that another explanation can help when one example fails. A speaker believing they have finished and a listener genuinely understanding are not the same thing.
