Stories of Sheng Zhen Men
How can we understand the different lessons in myths and service stories?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Stories can convey principles without every detail being established history. There are circumstances behind how myths become understood, passed on, and recorded. While listening, consider what the story wants us to see.
In the legend of Hou Yi shooting the suns, a hero originally helping others becomes emperor and begins desiring lasting power and immortality. A changed position may also change inner desire. Chang'e's flight to the moon has different versions: one says she opposed Hou Yi continuing immortal pleasure, another says she hurriedly swallowed the medicine to prevent theft. Understand versions separately rather than force them into one event or regard them as verified imperial history.
Everyday stories can show how people give. A guest described motorcycle trouble and a shop owner who carefully repaired it and checked its condition too. She was moved enough to call him an angel, and I felt his intention resembled a Bodhisattva. This was her experience and our feelings at the time. We can learn care and help from it, but cannot promise everyone the same encounter.
