A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Is an age ending in nine really unlucky? How can I face that year calmly?

An age ending in nine does not mean something bad must happen. Fortune is not inevitably poor at nineteen, twenty-nine or thirty-nine. Some people worry a year in advance. I think we should avoid frightening ourselves and consider actual circumstances that year rather than fixating on the nine in our age.

I have discussed the folk view of nine as Heaven’s number, from which caution around such ages developed. But in my faith, Heaven embraces and cares for all things. Why would it begrudge people using nine? Age also differs under traditional nominal and completed-year counting. There is even less reason to cling to a number as proof things must go badly.

However, long-held customs believed by many can create a collective influence in my understanding of energy. Greater inner concern makes it easier to be drawn by the claim. Do not keep imagining bad luck. Continue attending to daily responsibilities, doing good, helping others and accumulating blessings. Use wisdom when facing situations.

If it genuinely concerns you, divination can help explore that year’s condition. Do not first assume misfortune and rush into many actions. Clarify first, then seek blessings, disaster-averting rites or appropriate help if needed. Faith can support people, but caution remains necessary. Pay attention if something feels wrong, rest when tired and stay careful in dangerous places even after praying.

My mother taught me a folk custom called “plugging the dog’s mouth.” On the first day of the lunar year when your age ends in nine, family members prepare a mouthful of cooked thin noodles dipped in sugar. On waking, eat them before speaking. I have done it and felt those years passed smoothly, which is why I shared the experience. Using one custom to respond to concern about another is something those who need it may consider.

But when I asked elders about the reasoning, I received no complete explanation. I can therefore share the method and personal experience, not turn an explanation I imagine into an established answer.

An age ending in nine should not leave you afraid all year or blamed for every difficulty. We have discussed accidents: even with faith and regular good deeds, road conditions, health and immediate safety still need attention. Settle your mind, be careful where necessary and clarify problems. Then one number need not bind you.
