Deities and Faith
Does reciting Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun’s sacred proclamation qualify me to subdue demons for others?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
You can recite it to approach the deity and develop your own practice, but cannot assume this allows freely subduing demons for others. Scriptures and mantras have their power, while people responsible for such religious services also require a mission or heavenly calling. Identical words do not confer identical work.
In one early attachment case, reciting Guanyin’s and Kṣitigarbha’s sacred names felt like power striking stone and failing to enter. A fortune stick then offered a hint whose plain meaning was “Do not use deities of the living world.” I continued considering what help this individual needed, later finding, learning, and using Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun’s sacred proclamation.
This describes exploration in that service. One stick cannot become a general rule that deities of the living world cannot address matters of the dead, or compassionate Buddhas and Bodhisattvas lack power. We had already experienced help through sacred names. This case reminded me to match methods to individual circumstances. Recitation for personal development should follow that intention, rather than be confused with accepting demon-subduing work.
