Deities and Faith
What faith meanings do Zhong Kui’s lantern, umbrella and bat carry?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
The lantern, umbrella, bat and other features of Zhong Kui have religious purposes beyond decoration. Lanterns light and guide the way, with a small ghost scouting ahead. In stories, umbrellas collect ghosts and a bagua straw mat or chair is used against them. These uses help me understand his demon-subduing image.
The bat is linked to blessings because its Chinese name sounds like the word for good fortune. In the faith understanding I share, it is also one of Zhong Kui’s guardians or attendants. Our statue holds a bat, and descents have also used a sword and fan. What to prepare still follows the deity’s instructions, rather than a fixed full set of accessories every time.
Titles also vary. Introducing the Three Saints, I called Guan Sheng Di Jun the Great Emperor Who Subdues Demons, Xuantian Shangdi the Heavenly Venerable Who Sweeps Away Demons, and Zhong Kui the Great Emperor Who Expels Demons. Some folk traditions also call Zhong Kui the Great Emperor Who Subdues Demons. Understand context before criticizing a different title.
