Deities and Faith
How does traditional Zhong Kui ritual performance differ from receiving Zhong Kui at Sheng Zhen Men?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Traditional Zhong Kui performance and our reception during practice use different methods. One set of taboos cannot simply transfer to the other. Introducing the traditional rite, I discussed silence after face preparation, avoiding the performer’s personal name and respectfully calling him Lord Kui. Some also require bathing and abstaining from beef. Within that ritual, these support representing and manifesting the deity.
Sheng Zhen Men’s reception is our practice experience of divine spiritual energy. I can speak while receiving Zhong Kui and need not wear his costume. My understanding is that the body receives energy so the unseen world sees him, rather than depending on clothing or avoiding a spoken personal name.
I use my experience to explain the difference between two forms, not to say details of every local transmission are identical. I have also relayed taboos and death stories heard in the field, but the relationships and events were not firmly established. They cannot prove that someone died because of violating a taboo. Understand each context rather than treat all forms as identical after hearing one story.
