Must consecrating the Tiger Lord involve raw meat?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Raw meat need not be the only form used to consecrate the Tiger Lord. Traditionally, the tiger’s meat-eating nature is carried into worship, with meat seen as polite hospitality. I understand that idea, but some bloody scenes can also make people uncomfortable.
Times change and offerings can adapt. A cooked chicken leg is still meat without the bloodiness. Sheng Zhen Men’s Flying Tiger and Earth Tiger Generals were consecrated through invocation and incense rather than bloody meat. In our experience they remained powerful and helpful; raw meat was not a condition of strength.
This is my reflection and our experience, not a rule for every place. Understanding the purpose and what present people accept matters more than clinging to one external form.
As I understand it, the Tiger Lord is a guardian general and offerings need not be limited to a former tiger’s diet. We prepare cooked food we can also eat, such as fried chicken, then share it after worship for peace. Folk explanations of raw chicken and duck eggs vary. I have discussed duck eggs symbolizing suppression of harmful influences through wordplay, but that is one interpretation, not a verified sole origin everywhere.
A student asked whether strong insistence on raw meat might mean an animal spirit. It is worth considering, but offerings alone cannot determine another temple’s being. Respecting differences and personally choosing not to use raw food can coexist.
