Deities and Faith
What does “Mother’s compassion” mean, and when is it used as a greeting?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
“Mother’s compassion” is a common greeting in Mother Goddess faith and spiritual cultivation circles. At her temples, it can greet fellow practitioners; you may hear it at Songshan Cihui Temple, for example.
It expresses respect for the Mother’s compassion within a shared faith. Understanding it helps familiarity with local religious culture and courteous interaction. It is not a qualification for worship, nor does saying it establish cultivation or every energy source.
In the cultivation traditions I have encountered, “Mother” also explains the origin of the Great Dao. Calling the Golden Mother of the Jade Pool or Jiutian Xuannü “Mother” goes beyond seeing a female deity, expressing origin, instruction, and care. Some feel deeply moved, as if reunited with their mother after years. Others react less strongly and can still approach respectfully; tears are not a fixed requirement.
