Deities and Faith
Are wishes easier on deities’ birthdays, and can celebrations be held early?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Ceremonies may be scheduled around a divine birthday or earlier on a holiday for easier attendance. I believe deities value sincerity rather than only dates, just as human birthdays may be celebrated early. Inability to attend that day need not mean your intention went unseen. Participate voluntarily according to each event’s arrangements.
The second day of the second lunar month, for example, is Touya and the Earth God’s birthday. I once celebrated Master Ji Gong on the same day and heard his teaching. That was that event’s arrangement, not an annual requirement. Missing Touya does not prevent later requests to the Earth God. The first and fifteenth days or a time when you have something to report can also allow sincere expression.
To explain why birthday wishes are often considered easier, I compare asking a favor when a friend feels happy. Shared celebration and offerings express respect and joy. Discussing Qiniangma on Qixi, I similarly used the Cowherd and Weaver Girl’s joyful reunion to convey the feeling.
This is my faith perspective, not a guarantee that choosing the right birthday fulfills every wish. Know your request and express it clearly rather than handing everything to deities when the date arrives.
I have also compared a friend’s birthday to remembering divine help and expressing gratitude through action when time and ability allow, rather than remembering only when in need. I said I try to attend celebrations “when possible.” Illness or changing circumstances may require adjustments, such as supportive recitation at home, without discouragement. Consider heartfelt effort and practical attendance together. One absence does not establish lack of faith.
