A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Deities and Faith

What attitude should I bring to lamp offerings, fortune support, blessings, and obstacle removal?

Within faith, lighting lamps expresses brightness, warmth, and care. We value a process of understanding needs, expressing prayers in a written petition, and confirming that the rite is satisfactorily completed. People's requests differ. Paying does not mean asking deities to manage your entire life.

Fortune support, averting disaster, removing obstacles, and appeasing Tai Sui have their own purposes. Not every named service needs adding to yourself, and spiritual strength is not a competition for who practices best. Ask why something is needed, which area it supports, and how you should cooperate. I have discussed continuing annual blessings through accumulating spiritual resources and the possibility of new everyday mistakes, rather than one problem remaining forever unresolved.

Qian Qian once felt unhappy about classmates' remarks and did not want to attend school. She said a lamp was offered at the beginning of term, the comments later stopped, and she became happy again. I felt the prayer offered support then, while also discussing how imagined scenes affect emotions. This was one experience, not a guarantee that lamps control classmates or remove all bullying.

Alongside ritual support, life and outlook need adjustment: work seriously, willingly change habits, and care for your health. Individual conditions differ, so one ceremony cannot promise to cancel every misfortune. Fees mentioned earlier are information from that year and need current confirmation. Understand content and costs and participate freely and knowingly, so it does not add pressure.

Dao Fan shared that early in the pandemic, the shop closed and he felt panicked. After a blessing ceremony he felt steadier, supported by deities and everyone together. This is his faith experience then, not a way to determine infection. In the same conversation I emphasized practical precautions first, alongside reducing excessive fear.

I compare averting misfortune to a hole in a pocket: if the hole remains, money put in still leaks. The point is not only to increase good things, but to understand whether the problem continually causing suffering and depletion has actually been addressed.

Someone being bullied and deeply hurt may not manage simply by being told to reframe and be happy. Someone ill or with severe toothache may not enjoy an outing or film either. First care for what hurts, then discuss building a better state. That meets actual needs more closely than leaving a positive-energy slogan there.

In earlier explanations, I distinguished prayer directions: illumination lamps seek brightness of the primordial spirit; Medicine Buddha lamps health and safety; Kṣitigarbha lamps transformation of negative influences; Wealth God lamps prosperity; Wenchang lamps academic success and career; and Tai Sui lamps appeasing Tai Sui. Knowing what you are praying for matters more than seeing many names without understanding their intentions.

Lamps also need practical care. Wind, space, and staff supervision affect arrangements, so not every outward phenomenon should receive only one religious explanation. Lamp offerings seek support. After an accident, injuries and car repairs still need handling; protection does not necessarily mean there was no damage at all.

If money is temporarily insufficient, do not force payment. I have said those unable to afford the fee then could learn to chant themselves. Sweeping, folding lotus offerings, and other feasible help also express willingness. Blessings aim to support rather than burden people. Understand needs before choosing lamps. Some items are optional; every listed name need not be added.

If you see a lamp formation, first understand that occasion. Introducing a leap-month longevity rite, I discussed lamp arrangements, chanting, and dedication for family blessings. That was the ceremony's arrangement, not a requirement that every blessing use the same form. Merely copying the arrangement does not complete the whole practice.

Even rites called lamp lighting can have different purposes. I discussed natal Seven Stars lamps in terms of strengthening the natal primordial spirit, while lamps before Buddhas emphasize offering light to deities and Buddhas and dedicating prayers. First clarify your aim and the method being used. Names and numbers alone cannot make every rite identical.
