A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. How can I learn tarot and other card divination, and choose a service?

Begin by understanding the cards' own definitions, rather than interpreting solely according to your wishes. In choosing a teacher, look beyond the number of tools they know. Examine whether they have a genuine specialty and the character shown in their work.

Broad learning is not bad, but establish one solidly learned focus that you truly handle well. I have encountered other divination disciplines too, while remaining most focused on Chinese chess divination. Listing many methods does not show equal familiarity with every one.

Different tools sometimes suggest related principles. In one recording, discussing the fourteen distinct chess pieces after removing duplicates suddenly reminded me of tarot's fourteenth card, Temperance. Its balance and moderation seemed interesting alongside Fu Mo practitioners' inner-outer and yin-yang balance. This was an inspiration arising in conversation then.

Providing readings requires character as well as accuracy. I saw a news report about a tarot reader whose earlier accurate work led someone to refer a female client. According to the report, he took her to worship at a temple but allegedly behaved inappropriately in the car, including forcibly kissing her. I found that very regrettable. Being able to divine and being able to govern your intentions are different. Interpretation ability cannot excuse neglect of how clients are treated.

When your own state is unstable, first consider whether you can actually help. Rushing into service may lead to excessive interference in others' lives or excessive depletion of your own energy. That is another reason I remind people to understand their abilities clearly.

I first learned the I Ching, then chess divination, and only later returned to tarot with a sudden sense that it connected. Miao Yuan described studying tarot ten years earlier while feeling a key had not opened, then gaining different understanding when returning through experience and time. These are our individual paths. They do not mean everyone must learn chess divination before understanding tarot.

Tarot can discuss the future too; prediction is not exclusive to mediumship. I clarified this while talking with Miao Yuan: divination considers future directions from present circumstances, while later choices and actions can still change outcomes. Different tools have their own definitions and expressive detail. We cannot require every tool to answer in precisely the same way.

Teachers also differ in using upright and reversed cards. Some use both for more interpretive information. Sheng Zhen Men's tarot use finds upright positions sufficient for what is being explored. This explains our method, not a claim that others are wrong to use reversals or that learning card meanings carefully is unnecessary.
