Deities and Faith
What affinities do we seek when visiting spiritual mountains and different temples?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Visiting spiritual mountains and making pilgrimages involve approaching deities, understanding affinity, and learning, not simply worshipping at many temples. More places and longer travel do not establish better cultivation. Understand your purpose, the rituals, and received reminders.
I have compared sightseeing itineraries with teaching pilgrimages. Without explanation, people may simply follow with incense and watch; guidance helps understanding of different temple approaches and personal states. Environments, affinities, and conditions differ. Fame alone does not make every temple suitable for everyone.
Prepare beforehand and keep arrangements proportionate. Sheng Zhen Men consults first and checks participants’ condition afterward as our group method. Record perceptions without chasing visions throughout or continually changing places to find a spiritual patron. Returning to daily life steadier and willing to practice is also a valuable gain.
One pilgrimage involved different exercises at three temples. At Zhulinshan Guanyin Temple, disciples trained for years first sensed conditions, then drew lots for discussion. At Fengtian Temple, they practiced expressing sincere inner wishes. At Cihui Temple, they explained desired assistance. Those were that occasion’s guidance, not permanent assignments for those temples or completion of cultivation through three stops.
