Deities and Faith
Why do prayer, wishes, and fulfilling vows still require personal action?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Prayer can support you while your work remains yours. Comparing deities to friends and teachers reminds people to gradually build a familiar relationship with faith and seek help honestly in difficulty. What they offer may be something to learn, not only what you presently want.
Before making a vow, consider what you are willing to do. A grand wish without preparation or action does not fulfill itself. Fulfilling a vow is not bargaining that sincerity will appear only after success. Some experiences felt protective to me, yet no formula of offerings, repetitions, or money guarantees fulfillment. Confidence, blessings, circumstances, and choices all require consideration.
The Martial Wealth God once asked why my request obliged him to give. This was not a prohibition on seeking wealth, but a prompt to distinguish real need from desire. At a Lantern Festival ceremony, the Heavenly Official as Civil Wealth God reminded us to act on good intentions, not merely speak. I recalled fewer descents in the previous two years, perhaps with messages mainly conveyed by practitioners or me. That was memory of those years, not an annual schedule or guarantee of a future visit.
He compared blessings to a seed of goodness in a field of merit. After receiving it, continue tending through helping, good deeds, and merit, and learn to share. Quoting that deities are three feet above our heads encouraged attention to conduct and intention, not fear that every mistake brings disaster. Paying for a ceremony does not buy blessings without cultivation. Five hundred mentioned then was an example, not current pricing or a unit price for blessings.
Forms may change with time, while sincerity remains important and must be shown in action. Prepare, apologize, and help where appropriate. Not yet receiving a desired result need not immediately mean divine indifference, nor must belief be proved by ignoring reality. Prayer supports moving forward; it cannot replace life.
Expressing intentions clearly also matters. In religious service, I have discussed ritual specialists understanding the intended aim and how to request divine help so intention and action correspond. Yet deities are not tools obeying human commands. I still have questions about how they respond and their own thinking. Assuming they know everything cannot excuse failing to express, give, and face problems.
For employment, applications still need sending. If you need a friend’s introduction, actively explain your search. Past connections do not justify waiting at home to be recruited. Prayer provides inner support while action communicates need; both cooperate. Failure to find work immediately cannot simply establish that the deity is ineffective.
Examinations likewise require studying chapters, completing work, and serious effort to feel grounded. Prayer as I understand it strengthens positive action already underway, rather than replacing study while you verbally wish to pass and wait for deities to do it.
Even after effort, consider whether the request follows an upright path and what actual conditions allow. Some wishes may not suit you, and prayers may not unfold as imagined. Continue your responsibilities and understanding rather than treating worship as a transaction that guarantees a specified result after payment of effort.
