A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Deities and Faith

Why do deities not directly stop wrongdoing? Does no immediate change mean no protection?

Divine protection does not remove the need for food, rest and safety. Accidents can occur at religious events. Worship, volunteering and good deeds do not eliminate every risk. Practical conditions still need serious care.

Communicating with deities has helped me feel their great vows arise from love for beings, wishing them happiness and restored strength and light. This is care for life beyond romantic love. It is my faith experience, not verification of every deity’s or Buddha’s intention. Protection may also be courage, confidence and strength within difficulty, enabling breakthroughs rather than removing every difficulty.

I have compared soul growth to accumulating experience points: learning to solve problems gradually builds strength. Strong wording about “a smooth life without learning may end in hardship” reminded people not to seek complete exemption from tests. It does not mean every person living smoothly must suffer disaster. Worship also does not make money fall from the sky; personal effort and contribution remain necessary.

In my faith understanding, karma, a person’s intentions and different energies affect divine assistance. Some relationships were actively invited; some involve others’ responsibilities. Protection cannot mean continually canceling consequences for everyone. Explain requests clearly and do your part. Merely standing on site does not automatically provide every protection.

Likewise, wrongdoing occurring does not prove victims are unkind or insufficiently devout. Understand concrete events and care for those affected. Do not write conjecture as accident causation or judge all deities and Buddhas through one story. Unknowns should remain open.

I compare deities’ missions and strengths to specialist doctors. Different deities have different energies; being divine does not mean handling every problem. Sheng Zhen Men asks corresponding deities for different matters as part of understanding religious roles, not replacing medical care with prayer for bodily illness.

They also teach us to face things. I use fishing as a comparison: for work you can learn now, they teach thinking and doing; for what exceeds current ability, they assist. This is our school’s teacher-student experience. Letting someone learn first is not neglect, and help does not mean never needing to learn yourself.

Teachers and coaches are happy when students learn and athletes achieve. Through warm human relationships and family affection, I understand divine love: people’s happiness and loving interaction may bring satisfaction that the deities’ efforts have borne fruit. This is my perception and understanding, not the only account of every deity’s thoughts.

At twenty-seven, I started a business and prayed to many deities for success, but it did not develop as hoped. Moving later into divination instead helped me find a skill I could use well. Looking back, I understood it as a better-fitting direction, though not obvious at the time. Take a longer view rather than judge the whole experience solely by whether an immediate desired result arrived.

I have also discussed why deities do not simply remove every deceptive religion or wrongdoer through human choice. In my understanding, they do not make everyone believers with one gesture or decide everything for us. People retain agency over belief and action; otherwise human learning and experience would lose their meaning.

That is why I compare deities to teachers: they explain principles and help discern right from wrong rather than cancel every choice and consequence. A religious group still operating cannot prove it sound. I used adding or subtracting energy points and not yet reaching a level to explain why results may not be immediate. This was not a measurable punishment scorecard.

Someone once asked why the deities had not mentioned interference despite repeated consultations. I responded that we cannot imagine deities constantly watching and reporting everything. Sometimes special reminders are given, but the person’s question and willingness to understand and address matters also matter. Forcing unrelated issues on someone who has not asked or perceived a problem may not help.

In teaching divination, I used a hypothetical client asking about wealth while the reader keeps discussing unasked family or romance problems. The client may feel confused, lose trust and find further discussion harder. Explain the matters needing help clearly; helpers also need to hear what the person truly wants to understand. This is not indifference to other issues but an attempt to make discussion useful.

I have also used computer programs as a metaphor for how asking, intention and action set religious energy in motion. This helps explain cooperation between people and deities. It does not make a deity a computer obliged to obey a phrase entered as a command. Consider the actual issue, cooperation and whether conditions allow intervention then.
