A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Deities and Faith

How can faith support me in a low period rather than add pressure?

In difficult periods, faith’s greatest support for me is keeping hope alive. I have said that if one person cannot find a way, ask two or three to think together. Having deities does not remove human help. I have faced financial and life difficulties without seeing a path, yet believing the deities had not abandoned me helped me take another step.

Once I needed twenty thousand dollars the next day and lacked it. I had already borrowed from every friend available. I asked the Bodhisattva for help but remained too anxious to sleep. The next day, a television sales manager called. His Zi Wei astrology teacher had suggested learning another divination method. Seeing my chess-divination book in a bookstore and realizing we lived nearby, he wanted lessons. I suggested meeting first, but he brought twenty thousand dollars in tuition and said I could teach when free. I was deeply moved and did later teach him. Meeting years afterward, he said he had forgotten the lessons, which made the connection feel unusual to me. It was tuition, not an unconditional donation from a stranger. I understood it as the Bodhisattva’s support, not a guarantee that anyone praying receives the same money next day.

Lord Bao once encouraged a friend with “believe one part, receive ten; believe ten, receive a hundred.” I heard warmth and willingness to support people in difficulty, not a tenfold-return formula. Confidence can grow through personal contact without forcing immediate perceptions. I do not necessarily perceive such matters in ordinary life; often I know during deity reception and service. Others may differ.

Belief does not remove all hardship or require silently enduring everything to prove devotion. Ask for help when needed, accept practical assistance and gradually care for your life. Faith cannot walk your whole life for you, but may preserve strength to keep seeking solutions and acting.

Cherish life while living, do what you can and try to get along with family. At life’s end, knowing you did your best may make letting go easier. I feel faith may reduce loneliness, not that those without it must be lonely or punished. When able, care for others too. Reflecting on a card game, I reminded people that compassion in helping someone while doing something is worth retaining without calculating the return.

Faith may also offer a direction for participation. Group practice and learning can make time off meaningful and provide inner support. But interests and friendships can also begin with reading groups, courses or other activities; religion is not compulsory. Find something that brings steadiness and willingness to participate, then develop it gradually.

Within my first half-year of service, income was low and worried relatives and friends advised stable work. I did not immediately take hardship as divine neglect, but reviewed what I had yet to do well. I also asked how believing only when money comes differs from asking for winning numbers and believing only if they win. That was my way of facing that period of faith. I did rely on relatives’ and friends’ support and loans. Practical problems still had to be addressed.

In temples I have watched older believers tell the Bodhisattva about every family matter. For some, a temple is not only a place to seek outcomes but to speak what is on their heart. Sharing distress with deities or Buddhas they trust may bring relief. This is another value of religion I have seen in human life.

Looking back around age thirty, when my company struggled and I had debt, I had already practiced for years and still faced a painful path. Faith preserved hope that I could get through it and willingness to examine why projects were not coming and where learning or adjustment was needed. Belief in deities and facing my own problems happened together for me.
