A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Divination and Guidance

Can divining every small daily matter and repeating the same question make me dependent on fortune-telling?

If you must consult a reading before daring to decide what to wear or how to go out each day, fortune-telling may begin to bind you. Divination is meant to help find direction. If repeated questions create greater fear and less ability to decide, examine whether this way of using it is actually helping.

Dao Shun shared that a friend consulted readings even about clothing colors and whether to drive, ride a scooter or take a bus, eventually becoming distressed. He compared life to a video game and felt exploring without a walkthrough was part of the fun. This was his personal understanding, not a rule that divination is allowed only as a last resort. When I first learned, I too asked about everything. Later I understood that important matters or things I truly could not judge were occasions to seek direction through divination. Where I could judge, I should try and make an effort myself.

Asking the same question repeatedly, changing teachers until you hear an answer you like, is not necessarily confirmation. Consider the original reminder, what you have done and whether circumstances have changed. New circumstances can warrant further understanding. If nothing has changed and you simply want to cover over an unwelcome answer, it is easy to keep going in circles.

I value seeking favorable possibilities and avoiding harm, as well as what you can do yourself. Knowing a path is difficult allows you to consider another. If you still choose it, understand and take responsibility for that choice. A reading cannot replace work, communication, preparation or responsibility. In discussing “those skilled in change do not need divination,” I hope people gradually learn to observe, understand and judge without waiting for someone else to direct every step.
