A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Clear definitions tell you what each piece means, how pieces relate when placed together and how they connect with the question at hand. Interpretation then has a basis the client can follow and discuss, rather than leaving everything to the teacher’s authority.

Chinese chess has red and black pieces and different roles. Its basic theory is accessible, but memorizing piece meanings does not mean you can explain a problem clearly. The same piece must be read with the question, position and combination, not applied to everyone with one fixed phrase. Practice, life experience, willingness to listen and reviewing your work gradually improve interpretation. Religious services require additional learning; knowing divination does not mean knowing everything.

I initially chose Chinese chess partly because it allows arrangements to be made. We identify what seems lacking in a reading and use our religious methods to adjust it: the idea of supplying what is missing. For example, when lighting blessing lamps, we conduct individual readings and write before each name the chess-piece energy we believe needs strengthening. This is our school’s faith and service method. It offers direction, but actual circumstances and personal action still matter. Replenishment does not mean everything automatically becomes perfect.

To make learning convenient, I created portable cards with the basic meanings and principles of each piece. Dao Shan shared that she often carried them and consulted them when facing everyday choices. A reference card is useful, but you still need to understand why an interpretation is made. Seeing only red or black does not mean you understand the whole reading.

We must also distinguish divination about a specific matter from a life chart based on birth conditions and consideration of an entire lifetime. I use chess divination to discuss the immediate question through what appears concerning this person and this matter. The lifetime and annual-fortune chart I have researched involves further aspects of connection with deities. Learning ordinary piece selection does not mean being able to read someone’s entire life. Using chess does not make all interpretations the same. Knowing the question and method first prevents confusion.
