When discussing subduing dragons and tigers, I think not only of external creatures but also inner forces. Subduing the tiger can remind us to manage impulsiveness and negative states. Subduing the dragon brings to mind pride, intense desires and attachments.

A tiger is powerful; when power bursts out without proper control, it can become impulsiveness. Dragons are noble in many images and can suggest pride. Using these comparisons to examine whether emotions, comparison or desire lead us makes the work of cultivation easier to understand.

This connects with Sheng Zhen Men’s teaching to first subdue our own inner demons. Do not think only of powerful things you can confront outside while failing to see what is happening within.

This is my understanding of practice through arhat images, not verification of every dragon- or tiger-subduing legend. Learning their spirit still concerns willingness to notice and adjust ourselves when situations arise.
