Spiritual Cultivation and Movement
Is the New Age “higher self” the same as Sheng Zhen Men’s original spirit?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
I would say they have close similarities, but two names alone cannot make every person’s explanation identical. First clarify whether their higher self means their own inner spirituality or another being guiding them. That distinction matters.
In my twenties, a supervisor introduced me to some New Age ideas, and I also explored astrology. These were encounters and impressions at that time. As I understood it, the higher self meant moving beyond a selfish lesser self and returning to a more loving, compassionate self. From Sheng Zhen Men’s discussion of original spirit and primordial spirit, I find that similar.
But higher self and higher spirit should not be confused. Inner spirituality differs from an external guiding or guardian spirit. Even hearing descriptions of light and love, understand what is meant rather than skip judgment because the names sound beautiful.
I do not reject New Age entirely. Some ideas I understand and accept. Among teachers encountered, some felt comfortable and others seemed questionable. Observing and listening widely is fine, but ultimately know what you are learning and connecting with, turning learned principles into your own wisdom.
