A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Do unsuccessful New Year cakes or hearing “not cooked yet” mean a year of bad luck?

New Year foods such as prosperity cakes and rice cakes carry good wishes. One remark need not condemn your entire year’s fortune. When discussing whether rice cake was cooked, I explained that someone asking if food was ready was not necessarily predicting your year.

Customs can be understood and their auspicious intention retained without becoming increasingly frightened. Look first at what is happening: is the food ready, are family relations good, and is daily life being cared for? New Year blessings aim at happiness, not making a piece of cake a year-long source of pressure.
